We’re back with another easy DIY for the festive season. This time, we’re sharing a simple and charming way to create wicker heart wreaths - perfect as Christmas ornaments, thoughtful handmade gifts, or warm accents around your home.
Put on your favourite festive playlist, gather a few natural materials, and let’s create something that’s sure to make your guests say wow!
First Things First: What Is Wicker?
Wicker is not a material, but an ancient weaving technique used to create durable furniture and home decor. While often confused with rattan (which is the plant fiber itself), wicker refers to the method of interlacing flexible strands over a sturdy frame—typically wood or metal—to form a textured surface.
At Ombak Lifestyle, this technique is the heart of our sustainable mission, transforming raw Indonesian and Indian fibers into functional art.
The Beauty of Handmade Patterns
Every handmade piece carries subtle imperfections - and that’s exactly what makes it special. No two wicker creations are ever the same, and that individuality is what gives handmade décor its warmth and character.
Materials you'll Need:
Rattan or wicker strips
Pencil or marker
Craft glue or hot glue gun
Ribbon, twine, or yarn (optional)
Decorative elements of your choice
Want to try this DIY with raw rattan?
If you enjoy working with natural materials and would like to experiment further, we also supply rattan materials suitable for DIY projects, craft explorations, and custom creations.
Our rattan is commonly used by artisans for weaving furniture, décor, and accessories - making it ideal for hands-on projects like this wicker heart wreath.

Step-by-step guide:
1) Prepare the wicker strips:
Start by cutting the rattan or wicker strips into equal lengths. The size can be customised depending on how large you want your heart wreath to be.
As a general guide, 8–10 inches works well for small to medium ornaments.

2) Shape your heart:
Using a pencil or marker, lightly sketch a heart shape on a flat surface.Arrange the wicker strips along the outline, gently bending them to follow the curves of the heart.
This is just a starting point—you can get creative by:
Increasing strip thickness
Layering only the outer edges
Playing with open or dense patterns

Important tip: Apply glue along the joints and press firmly but gently. Allow the glue to dry completely before moving the piece.
3) Adjust the edges:
Once the glue has dried, trim or adjust any excess wicker using scissors to refine the shape.
Remember: DIY doesn’t have to be perfect. What matters most is the time, intention, and love you put into creating something by hand—so don’t stress about small imperfections.
4) Personalize your wicker heart wreath:
Now comes the fun part—styling your wreath based on how you want to use it.
For hanging decor:Tie a ribbon, lace, or twine at the centre top, secure it with glue, and hang it on a wall, door, or window.
For Christmas tree ornaments:Add small decorative elements like beads, buttons, dried flowers, leaves, or mini LED lights.
For a sentimental touch:Attach a backing of cardboard or coloured paper and glue on photos, handwritten notes, or postcards.
For a bold, playful look:Paint the wreath using acrylic or spray paint. Stencils or stickers can add patterns or festive messages.
For kids’ craft time:Hang bells, pom-poms, crystals, or ornaments—painting and embellishing works beautifully as a family activity.
Your Handmade Wreath Is Ready
In under 20 minutes, you’ll have a handcrafted wicker heart wreath that’s perfect for decorating your home or gifting someone special this festive season.
Wishing you a calm, creative, and joy-filled Christmas with your loved ones. 🎄✨
