Rethinking Packaging: A Closer Look at 100% Biodegradable Pacakging Filler - Water Hyacinth Pellets

Imagine opening a parcel packed with plastic fillers. They cushion your product, do their job for a moment - and then disappear from sight. But have you ever stopped to think about where they actually go next?
Not just packaging fillers, but almost every non-biodegradable item we touch daily. Once unwrapped, discarded, and forgotten, their story continues - quietly accumulating in landfills, waterways, and ecosystems. This is happening in millions of homes, every single day.
Now, picture a lake completely choked with water hyacinth. A thick, floating carpet that hides the water below, blocking sunlight and slowly suffocating life beneath the surface.
Two very different problems - yet driven by the same pattern: unchecked growth, overlooked consequences, and systems built to discard rather than transform.
At Ombak, we saw an opportunity where most saw waste.
For readers new to water hyacinth, we’ve shared a brief overview here → [https://www.ombak.life/post/100-biodegradable-and-eco-friendly-packaging-fillers-made-using-invasive-water-hyacinth]
What if a problem could become protection?
What if the same plant that chokes our lakes could protect the cups, lamps, and gifts we send to each other?

That question led to Eco Cushion by Ombak - a 100% biodegradable, eco-friendly packaging filler made from invasive water hyacinth.
How one water plant became a gentle cushion:
What you see below is a single water hyacinth stem.
From there, the journey unfolds:it is harvested from lakes, thoroughly washed, cut into smaller pieces, and laid out under the sun. Slowly, it turns from green to a warm golden brown. Once dried and processed, it finally finds its place inside a box - not as waste, but as a gentle, protective cushion for products in transit.
The hands behind the work:
Eco Cushion is not just about material - it’s about people. Every step of this process involves local hands and lived knowledge. From harvesting and drying to sorting and packing, the work supports livelihoods while restoring water bodies - especially in regions where water hyacinth has long been seen only as a problem.
The test that made it to the oscars (in our mind):
We packed a glassware, dropped the box from a balcony height, held our breath - and the glassware stayed whole. We repeated this across multiple rounds of long-distance shipping trials, including drop tests from heights of up to 30 feet.
So far, in just two years, we’ve removed over 4,300+ kilograms of water hyacinth from Indian water bodies - turning an environmental challenge into a functional, scalable solution.

Meet our estemeed partners:
There are several brands who have partnered with us to support research and development for Eco Cushion. (More on this soon ;))
Their involvement includes:– Developing SOPs for processing water hyacinth– Providing over 12 months of production and scale-up support– Government liaisoning– Exploring CSR collaborations and co-branding opportunities.
Life after the box:
What happens next matters. Eco Cushion doesn’t end its journey at unboxing.

It might be sprinkled into pot soil by a parent and child.
Added to compost.
Reused to pack another gift.
Or returned to the earth - naturally.
This packaging designed with a second life in mind.
A small change with a larger impact:
If every parcel that left a warehouse in India swapped a bit of plastic for plants, we’d clear more lakes, employ more hands, and bring more nature into our homes.
